“The most beautiful church in the Netherlands is undoubtedly the old Great or St.-Bavo’s Church in Haarlem.” Godfried Bomans in the Volkskrant 6 April 1966.
Whether or not the most beautiful church, it is certainly unique and the most important monument in Haarlem.
Its history begins around 900 AD with a small, wooden chapel. The present church, which originates from 1370, is the fourth.
The oude Baaf has witnessed many events – fires, wars, processions, funerals, feasts, riots and revolutions – and harbours many stories. Its history was written by master builders, noblemen, high-ranking clergy, the military, artists and the people of Haarlem.
This monumental building is supported by the Friends of the Great or St Bavo’s Church in Haarlem, a not-for-profit association which helps maintain and care for the cultural heritage of the church. The association offers guided tours, funds restoration projects, supports concerts and publishes articles, leaflets and books on the church and its history.
