May 2026 – Greetings from the Chair

Dear CADS,

May has been a rather splendid month. Not only have we enjoyed summer-like temperatures, prompting the occasional glass of Pimms, but we were also treated to HM Ambassador Chris Rampling’s talk on the UK–NL relationship and how he sees his role in strengthening it further. Apparently there are over 220 flights a day from Schiphol to the UK, so clearly quite a few people feel the two countries should keep in close touch. The biotech sector in particular is a fine example of world-class collaboration as is defence and security. The tourist industry between the two countries is thriving, even if some of us are still mildly aggrieved at travelling with two passports since Brexit…

To build trust in the advantages of the UK–Dutch partnership, the UK Embassy is reaching out to leaders in industry, and we do happen to have more than a few among our ranks. So I do wonder whether we might tempt Chris into engaging with CADS a little more regularly? Maybe he’d like to join our boat trip as several of his predecessors did, I will check with him.

New members

Business is, of course, only one part of what CADS is about. Our events are also a wonderful excuse to have meaningful conversations, enjoy ourselves and build lasting friendships. Leigh Turner, Carla and Toon Stegmann clearly agree, as they joined CADS in May. Welcome! We shall no doubt persuade you to give a short introduction at one of the next events…

Upcoming events

In June we’ll have our AGM; please see the details by following this link! Do come and let your voice be heard! Please let us know by noon, 12 June if you’re coming.

As an added treat, Dorette is inviting you to her garden party later that afternoon after the AGM. This is part of the Open Tuinen Dagen 2026. Dorette’s beautiful garden along the Keizersgracht (no. 40) in Amsterdam is well worth a visit, both for its blooms and for the pleasure of admiring the surrounding architecture.

In July there won’t be a CADS event or newsletter, but not to worry: we have a rather fun boat trip planned for 21 August. The sign-up link is already active, so do make sure to secure your place. I very much hope we won’t have to turn anyone away, but you know the drill: first come, first served!

We are also trying to organise a golf event. If that sounds like your sort of thing, do let us know by clicking on the survey sent to you in the email newsletter.

You can see the plans for the rest of the year by scrolling through our agenda. The KIGC like knowing definite numbers for lunch a week before the event, so please make sure you’ve signed up by noon on Friday beforehand! And if you find yourself with multiple lunch tickets in your shopping bag when you only want one, you simply need to click on ‘view cart’ and remove the surplus!

That’s all for now; I shall return to the serious business of lazing in the sun. I look forward to seeing you in June.

With warm regards,

Julia Heidstra, Chair Commercial Anglo-Dutch Society
