My dear CADS,
I hope you are all well and enjoying summer now that it has finally arrived. This month sees yours truly being very busy conducting many summer weddings as part of my role as Celebrant. I find this to be fantastic positive ‘work’ and am delighted I made my late career change!
Annual Boat Cruise
Friday 16th August saw many CADS and their guests enjoy an eventful cruise round the Amsterdam canals. Someone (at the boat company) had forgotten to order the food, so the company had to extend the trip and ply us with copious G&Ts while the chef got busy! When the food finally arrived (it was delicious), and when we finally poured off the boat, it is fair to say most of us were ‘3 sheets to the wind’, an hour late and very content!
Lustrum Golden Jubilee
Our Lustrum (Golden Jubilee) celebration dinner will be on Thursday November 14th, 2024, at the IGC in Amsterdam. Tickets will be on sale soon, so please start to consider who you would like to invite. It will be possible to book an entire table which could be an option for those of you in the corporate world!
Fortnightly Art Talks
In 2024 CADS has forged stronger links with the Anglo Netherlands Society and I know that some of you have also joined this society. One of their members Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff is organising some Art talks in English in Amsterdam, and has asked me to share the below information with you. Held at private members club Arti et Amicitiae, these talks are in English, set in this historical building right in the centre of town, within easy reach of public transport. An artist’s society, Arti et Amicitiae is both a building steeped in the history of the artist community of Amsterdam, and a contemporary exhibition space for contemporary local artists. The talks will take place after work and will consist of a one hour lecture and the chance to make use of the private bar afterwards for socialising.
The following talks are currently being scheduled:
• Women in the Dutch Republic
• Our Lord in the Attic; religion, tolerance and politics in the Netherlands
• Mondriaan’s Evolution into Abstraction
• Amsterdam: built on slavery and colonialism
• Mystery, miracles and magic: the work by the artist M.C.Escher
• The Dutch Golden Age in 6 Paintings
• Symbolism & Iconography in Dutch paintings
if you are interested in attending one of the talks please click on the link and remember to say that you are from CADS!!
If you have any other ideas or would like to volunteer to organise any part of the evening, please get in touch! The date is now confirmed, so please pop it in your agendas and start making plans to be in Amsterdam on 14th November.
WW 1 Battlefield tour to the Somme
John Cameron-Webb (CADS member) will be running a World War One tour to the Somme battlefields over the weekend of 5th and 6th October 2024. The tour will look at the series of British offensives commonly referred to as The Battle of the Somme, or “The Big Push” which cost around 245,000 British and Empire casualties between 1st July and 18th November 1916. Read more about the trip here.
Next meeting
Our speakers at the September (20th) meeting will be Benno Pieters (CADS member) and his business partner Shokoofeh Ketabchi. They have recently written a book – a guide in entrepreneurship and how to set up an AI powered business, and their presentation will give us much more detail on this publication.
See our events page for the latest schedule of events for your agendas. Many of you are super busy so please put ALL these dates in your diary NOW!
Thank you for your continued support and engagement with CADS. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.
